Whilst my clients generally know what they want in a kitchen space or living room, as a designer, I’m asked a lot about what the best layouts would be to create an amazing bathroom. I have come up with 6 simple tips which you can use.
1. Vanity placement
If you can help it, you never want to walk into the side of a vanity. It can make your space feel a whole lot smaller than it is and it also doesn’t create a sense of warmth and luxury.
2. Have a Hero piece
In every bathroom there should be a ‘Hero’- a standout focal point. This could be a large or unique bath tub or standout feature tiles. It could be a striking pendant hanging over the vanity or a marble stone feature wall. Be careful in your planning though, that there aren’t too many heroes that compete with one another. Too many heroes contradict the idea of a focal point and instead create an overwhelming space to walk into.
3. Hide your toilet
There is nothing worse than your toilet looking like the feature of your bathroom (I don’t care how fancy or expensive it is). Not only that but privacy is key. You want your guests to feel comfortable using your bathroom.
4. Smart storage solutions
Make your storage decisions with functionality in mind. Your powder room will most likely need minimal storage solutions, whilst your main bathroom will need plenty of storage. Consider how each family member will use the space both now and in the future.
5. Electrical layout
Ensure your bathroom is well lit, especially over the mirrors. It can be frustrating having lighting dull + dim in key areas e.g applying makeup. Also, be mindful of where you would like powerpoints. Think about having some in your drawers or cupboards for using appliances like hair dryers and straighteners to conceal cords and keep them neat and tidy. When planning your bathroom, keep in mind there are regulations regarding how close powerpoints can be to water sources (for obvious safety reasons).
6. Clever cleaning
I know it’s not what you want to be thinking about, but keep in mind how you will clean your bathroom. Having a freestanding bath looks amazing, however ensure that you are able to access behind the bath for cleaning purposes. It is a terrible thought to have a luxury bathroom, with dirt, grime + dust behind your gorgeous tub! Having a floating toilet is another great way to assist with cleaning as the mop can slide under a floating toilet quite easily. Consider your vanities as well, so that cleaning underneath these is a breeze….or alternatively use a cleaner 😊!!
